Calpex is an organization of associations and cooperatives of South American camelids’ breeders, born in 2013 to allow quechuaand aymara families to export the fiber produced by pastoral farming without local intermediaries.
Calpex is building a sustainable and fair supply chain where the animals can roam freely and the farmers can get better prices than those offered by local intermediaries. In this way, the breeders can manage all the fiber processing stages, from shearing to combing.
Calpex is supported by ISCOS Emilia-Romagna and Toscana and it achieved to involve more than 30 associations for a total of almost 2000 breeders from the High Andean Regions of Puno, Cusco, Arequipa and Apurimac, who managed to export high quality semi-processed alpaca’s fiberto Italian textile companies.
